Worldwide Reach
This book attracted international attention. Stowe’s story was circulated through the world and was printed in 67 different languages. No other book had been reproduced in so many ways at that time. Stowe toured internationally and, in particular, the French praised her for Uncle Tom's Cabin. Harriet was overwhelmed with the attention. More copies of this book were sold in Great Britain and, it was said that this was a huge reason as to why Britain didn’t support the Confederacy in the war.

A writer noted, 'Never since books were first printed has the success of Uncle Tom been equaled; the history of literature contains nothing parallel to it, nor approaching it; it is, in fact, the first real success in book making, for all other successes in literature were failures when compared with the success of Uncle Tom.' Within a year of its publication, Uncle Tom’s Cabin had sold more than a million copies."
