- Abolitionists were often Quakers or members of Christian congregations
- 1777- Slavery was banned in Vermont completely, some people supported that because they wanted to prevent large numbers of black people moving there
1800s
Differing Abolitionist Perspectives
- Uncompensated and immediate emancipation
- Compensated and gradual emancipation
- Black people should have a separate homeland abroad
- Some were motivated due to fear of violence, worried that slaves would start taking revenge and kill their masters
- Some thought it was bad for the economy and bad for the work ethic of whites
